Planet Earth,now home to nearly 8 billion people, and yet there are still places that remain pristine. Where a spellbinding variety of life continues to thrive. These are the last regions that could be called Eden.

地球，如今是近80亿人口的家园，然而有些地方仍然保持着原始状态。还有很多迷人的生命，在那里繁衍生息着，几乎是“伊甸园”一般的存在。

In the heart of Southeast Asia, lies the tropical island of Borneo. Around the size of Texas, its ancient forest has remained unchanged for one hundred and forty million years. Bathed in sunshine and quenched by abundant rainfall, over time these hot house conditions have spawned some sixty thousand species of plants and animals, making Borneo possibly more biodiverse than any other island. 

热带岛屿加里曼丹岛，坐落在东南亚的中心地带，岛屿面积与美国德克萨斯州相仿。漫长的1.4亿年里，这片古老的雨林几乎没有变化。沐浴着阳光，享受着丰沛雨水的滋养，这里暖房般的气候条件在漫长岁月里孕育出了6万多种动植物物种，使加里曼丹岛成为地球上生物多样性最丰富的岛屿之一。

Evolving in isolation, over six thousand of its inhabitants are found nowhere else on Earth. Remarkably, this wealth is built on a foundation of shallow, nutrient core soil and yet, somehow, life has triumphed, turning this into a paradise unlike any other.

由于在与世隔绝的环境中演化，逾6,000种岛上居民都是这里独有的物种。值得注意的是，这样的物种宝库却是植根于岛上贫瘠的浅表土壤环境之中的。然而生命却战胜了逆境，将这里改造成了独一无二的天堂。

Dawn breaks over Borneo's flooded lowland forest, a mosaic of tree-lined waterways and swampy thickets. A unique habitat that has given rise to a one-of-a kind primate. Proboscis /proʊˈbɑ:sɪs/ monkeys, named after their outstanding noses. For an alpha male, the bigger the nose, the bigger the harem. 

第一缕晨曦洒向加里曼丹岛河流密布的低地丛林，两岸树木掩映的河流与蔓生的灌丛交叠密布。这片独特的栖息地养育了一种绝无仅有的灵长类动物——长鼻猴，因其显眼的长鼻子而得名。对一只雄性首领来说，鼻子越大越醒目，它能拥有的伴侣就会越多。

They live in groups of twenty or more. This two year old female is no longer dependent on her mother, but still needs the protection of her tight-knit family. They survive mainly on a diet of leaves that are low in calories and difficult to digest, unless you have a barrel belly and 48 hours to ferment them.

长鼻猴家族一般由20多只长鼻猴组成。这只2岁大的雌性长鼻猴已经不太依赖自己的妈妈了，但它仍然需要关系紧密的家族成员们提供保护。长鼻猴平日的主要食物是一些热量较低的树叶，它们并不易于消化，除非你身宽体胖，而且有充裕的时间可以消磨。

Young leaves aren't as tough, but there are fewer to go around and breakfast finishes off their supply. Now the tenderest shoots are on the other side of the river. Patrolled by the largest reptiles in the world, Saltwater crocodiles, up to six metres long. They'll devour any animal they can sink their ten-centimetre-teeth into.

嫩叶不会那么难嚼，但是数量要少得多。这边美味的早餐已经所剩无几了，现在要吃到嫩叶，只有到河对岸去了。而这条河里却游荡着世界上最大的爬行动物之一，它就是湾鳄。它的体长可达6米，一旦被它们10厘米长的尖牙咬住，任何动物都会成为它们的腹中之物。

But if the monkeys are going to eat, they'll have to cross the river. The alpha male leads the way. The rest rapidly follow. The babies must cling onto their mothers. Each impact carries soundwaves up and down the river. Now too big to be carried, for this youngster, a solo plunge is a daunting prospect.

但如果这群长鼻猴想要有吃的，它们必须渡河。首领第一个跃向了对岸，其它成员紧跟其后，幼崽们需要抱紧它们的妈妈。每只长鼻猴入水时都会在水面上闹出动静。这只较大的长鼻猴幼崽已经不能抱着妈妈过河了，独自入水的挑战让它心惊胆战。

This is a twelve-metre-leap of faith. At the surface she's desperately vulnerable. But these unique monkeys are semi-aquatic. With partially webbed hands and feet, they can propel themselves quickly, but quietly, covering a distance of up to eighteen metres! Made it! She joins in the buffet of fresh young leaves.

As females mature, they seek out mates in other groups, but for now, this family is all she needs. Close bonds and specialist adaptations allow proboscis monkeys to prosper in this water world. 

雌性长鼻猴在成年后会去其它猴群寻找伴侣，但是现在它需要的只有自己的家人。紧密的亲情联系和适应性特长，让长鼻猴能够在这片河流密布的世界繁衍兴旺。

Moving inland, Borneo's forest rises to form a towering canopy. By noon, the first of the daily downpours tops up the humidity to one hundred percent. With twice as much rain as Florida, this Eden is a sultry, thirty-degree, paradise, nurturing the tallest tropical trees in the world, that play a crucial part in the combat of climate change, each of them absorbing more carbon than any others.

继续向内岛进发，加里曼丹岛的丛林逐渐升高，形成高耸的林冠。到了中午，今天的第一轮降雨让空气湿度达到了完全饱和。这里的降雨量是佛罗里达州的两倍，一座高达30摄氏度的湿热伊甸园。这里养育着世界上一些最高的热带树木，它们在对抗全球气候变化的过程中扮演着重要角色。这些树木具有出色的吸碳能力。
