To tell the stories of remarkable paradise habitats, over the course of a year, the Eden film crews immersed themselves in 6 far flung locations: the steaming jungles of Borneo, the scorching desert sands of the Namib, the African Savannah of Luangwa, the remote tropical Islands of the Galapagos, the mountain realm of Patagonia and the pristine temperate forests of Alaska. Each presented the team with fresh challenges, in their attempt to capture ground-breaking behaviours, using the latest technology. And all against the backdrop of a global pandemic.

The first location took the Eden crew to a tropical island in the heart of Asia. Venturing deep into the jungles of Borneo to film previously unseen animal behaviour. Using state of the art camera technology, they captured dramatic imagery from above and below. Cutting edge macro lenses revealed new science about the secret lives of Borneo's insects. But the team's greatest challenge was filming a family of rare Bornean orangutans, high up in the world's tallest tropical trees.Camerawoman, Justine Evans, is no stranger to Borneo. She's been coming to the ancient rainforest of Danum Valley for 25 years.

“I have to say that this is the most beautiful forest I've ever seen.” But outside of protected areas like this, deforestation and palm oil production have led to an 80% loss in orangutan habitat over the last two decades. “I think nothing quite prepares you for the sight of the unrelenting landscape of palm oil. Just the monoculture on such a grand scale, it's shocking. Every time I go back to Borneo, I wonder what I'm gonna find and whether I'm going to see the orangutans.” Justine will have to climb high up into the canopy to stand a chance of filming orangutans in their world.

The team get to work erecting a platform positioned across from a fruiting tree that a mother at her infant have been known to visit. After six hours, everything is in place. Justine will be at eye level with the orangutans. But the platform is only three feet long by three feet wide, it's going to be a tight squeeze. “There's about enough space for the camera and the tripod and me, and that's the edge, all the way down about a hundred foot to the ground. All we need thousand meringue tanks to come along. ”

For the next seven days, Justine waits patiently, from dawn to dusk, for the mum and baby to show. “I've been here since half 5 in the morning and it's now, 3 pm. That's a long time to be sitting on an aluminium tea tray.” Without any notice, the rainforest dumps an inch of rain onto Justine and her camera. “It's extremely wet out there, so Tim's come up and we're trying to evacuate all the kits. We went from sunny to pouring with rain within 10 minutes. Tim is heading down and I'm gonna follow.”

A week into the shoot, without so much as a glimpse of an orangutan, Justine swaps the sit and wait approach to tracking them on foot. “I'm slightly dreading the prospect of dragging all our kits through this forest. Running around on the ground trying to follow and the orang is really tricky.” And this tropical jungle is infested with bugs and blood-sucking leeches. “I thought I felt something on my finger, earlier.” Orangutans have an intimate knowledge of where fruiting trees lie, the crew are relying more on guesswork.

Finally one of the trackers radios are sighting. "I think they're still up there. This is the first opportunity I'm gonna get hopefully to see the orangutan and it's great that we've got a female with a young that's exactly what we're after.” But the family is moving too quickly through the canopy for the crew to keep up. “It's cat and mouse. I think this orangutan was trying to shake us off, personally.” After hours of searching through dense rainforest, Justine is finally rewarded with an intimate view.

“There she is. Well, that's the first time I've seen her. It's the female orangutan. She's just come into a little clear spot. They have led us, after a few hours of going through quite thick vegetation, to a very high fig tree. It is absolutely chocka with fruits.” Over the next 10 days, trudging more than 70 miles, Justine was able to revisit the young family and capture their tender moments together.

“When you film any of the great apes, you feel that connection. It's unmistakable. The emotions that you see running through them is so relatable. I've come away feeling obviously very rewarded by the experience but tinged with a sadness, because of the bigger picture in Borneo.” As long as areas like Danum Valley are protected, orangutans stand a chance, and all the species that call Borneo home, will be kept safe for the future of us all.

After humid jungle, coastal desert in the South West of Africa offered a very different set of challenges. Filming over a period of a year, the Eden team braved the hostile conditions of the Namib desert. They came here to capture ground-breaking behaviours, from the small and rare, the plentiful but wary and the largest mammal on Earth. The team's greatest challenge was to tell the intimate story of how a family of desert elephants find sustenance in an unforgiving landscape.

With only 150 inhabiting an area of 80,000 square kilometres, the first job is working out where to look. So the crew team up with a Wildlife field guide Paul Brehem, who's been living and working in the Namib desert for over 30 years. “There's a huge amount of pressure on these animals to get enough food, to get enough water in this area, so the pressure's on them.” Their search takes them through one of Africa's remotest regions across the roughest of terrains.

But cameraman Louis labrom has come equipped with a specialist camera system that's designed for just this sort of task. “This is a gyro stabilised gimbal, more commonly found on helicopters, but in this instance we're using it on a vehicle with this arm that sort of, will take out most of the bumps. It's basically spring loaded. This really allows us to get some really intimate shots that otherwise we might miss.”

As Paul's team guides them to the most likely area to find elephants, a dried river bed. A desert miracle unfolds. “There's a river in the desert. It is really weird to hear the sound of running water in the desert. This is absolutely amazing.” Then the last thing you'd expect to happen in a desert, getting stuck in the mud! “We under anticipated how deep this little patch was and we need to dig ourselves out in the back in order to reverse out.”

As the water levels rise, Louis' particularly concerned about his precious camera. At last their luck changes. Fortunately, the appearance of water has brought an elephant herd right to the film crew. “Just a really lovely moment and it's really nice to see elephants actually having life a little bit easier. Yeah it looks really happy.” But in a matter of days the river dries out, for desert elephants, the quest for food and water is endless, sometimes leading these intelligent mammals to cash in on more reliable sources.

With increased human settlement and farming, more and more bore holes are being sunk to tap into the Namib's groundwater reserves. Drawing these thirsty giants into villages. At times, this can cause conflict. Efforts are underway to promote tolerance and learn how best to live alongside such an imposing neighbour. “Educating school children, you are investing in the future. When children are not having a lot of fear, they are very easy to live with elephants and they'll take care of them.”

Fortunately, the herd that resides in the riverbed has knowledge, passed from generation to generation, that allows them to make the most of what this desert has to offer. And they lead the crew to a grove of Ana trees, laden with protein rich pods. A welcome meal for even the youngest members of the herd.

After 4 weeks of tireless tracking, Louis finally gets the shots he needs. “It was amazing to see someone so little be able to survive in what seems like a really inhospitable place. It's really testament to their mother because obviously the matriarchs know where the water is and where the food is. So without them, they would all pretty much just perish.”

This miracle Eden has existed in harmony for millions of years. Today, with fewer than 150 of these highly-specialized desert elephants living in the Namib, it's critical that this place is kept safe from both human expansion and the rigours of climate change. “The key is to protect the whole ecosystem for all the species that exist here and I think what's really important is to start seeing places like these as a world heritage for the entire planet, to all the people and all the future generations, this is really important to protect.”

On the other side of Africa, Zambian flood plains are a very different habitat, but in their own way just as extreme. Filming critically endangered black rhino, presented the Eden crew with their biggest challenge yet. North Luangwa is home to Zambia's only black rhino population. Around 50 roam a wilderness of 22,000 square kilometres. To stand a chance of finding one, the crew team up with a North Luangwa Conservation programme. A long-term partnership of dedicated scientists and highly trained scouts.

“The rhinos form a focus or a flagship for the much wider ecosystem and the rhinos scouts themselves are all recruited from the local communities.” For the last 35 years, they have put their lives on the line to combat armed poachers. And successfully established a safe haven for the last of Zambia's black rhino. And there's one rhino whose story the crew are particularly keen to tell. “Kango is very close to our hearts. He's named after a local chief. We released him here on the Mwaleshi in the heart of the North Luangwa and you see him today, he's mating, he's bred, he's got, I think, it's 5 females now in his area, he's in tiptop condition.”

To track Kango, the crew work closely with a rhino monitoring unit. “We track the rhinos early in the morning, some have transmitters so that using the antenna, we know the direction and receiving coordinates from aeroplane.” With a positive sighting radioed in, the only way for the crew to proceed in this terrain is on foot. Carrying all 30 kilograms of camera gear. The team cover 16 kilometres a day, homing in on the signal from the transmitter that Kango carries on his horn.

After a morning's trek, the scouts appear to be closing in on a small gathering of rhino. The crew moves in to set up for the first shot. Rhino pick up on movement, sound and also scent. “Had one warning snort and we’re settled, but they just um, one of them just charged, I think it was the female. So we've just had to run up a tree. Bit close.” “She heard us and she came right up to us and I foolishly moved so she charged and we all kind of disappeared in various directions.”

A sobering first encounter for the crew, but thanks to the experience scouts, they continue their search for Kango unharmed. Exposing them to the full force of the rainy season. “Basically, we're playing cat and mouse with these rhinos within this stick of vegetation. Now that it's raining, we're having to hide in the bush.” Ten days on, they finally close in on their feisty subject once more.

“ Now that Kango's become a dominant bull, he can be both extremely aggressive and extremely placid ,but therefore tracking him and working with him is pretty risky, because he can go either way depending upon the day.” But as Nathan finally gets ready to film, Kango gets a whiff of them and this time chooses to turn tail. Camera shy, he continues to run rings around the team. “I'm not in love with that rhino anymore. Kind of been up and all over the place today. Kind of been up and all over the place today. He's hiding there, laughing at us.”

With time fast running out, the team resorts to a more hands off approach to filming. The drone camera captures a unique perspective of Kango, who appears oblivious to its presence. Helping the team keep an eye on him. But Kango can travel nearly 30 kilometres a day, making it impossible for Nathan to keep up. A week later the plane reports a more hopeful development. “Well, he's not far away, I've got a signal already. One, his head, then the other one's pointing the other way, there's one and there's two. I think Kango is on a date and that's why they haven't moved far, they've been dating.”

In the hope that Kango is now settled, the team move in for one last attempt. To be rewarded with a rarely filmed and surprisingly gentle courtship scene. “I mean, we got ready close to them, to start about 40 feet away. Just seeing them lying down, it's quite hard to see but I mean the first sighting, you know to think you're just standing next to wild black rhino.” Kango's future looks secure, thanks to the tireless efforts of the North Luangwa Conservation Programme.

On the other side of the world, 1000 kilometres of the Coast of South America lies the Galapagos Archipelago. Here, the Eden team were presented with the task of filming in one of the most isolated and inaccessible locations on the planet. With the help of the latest camera technologies, the crew captured previously unseen behaviours and found new ways to tell the extraordinary stories of the islands' remarkable inhabitants. Many of whom have no fear of humans.“The sea lines are all over us, tugging on my fins. The stories about Galapagos wildlife being exceptionally tame are certainly true.”

But the team were about to face a much bigger challenge! COVID-19. Everything closed down. No one was allowed in or out of the islands. 6 months later, when the crew are allowed to return, travel protocols are a little more “invasive”. With test results giving them the all-clear, they've got a lot of lost time to make up. Heading to the exposed coast of Fernandina Island, they've saved one of their toughest shoots till last. A journey only the largest male iguanas dare to make.

“The dream shot we want is an iguana in a roller, similar to the classic kind of surfer shot that you might see.That involves the underwater team basically going into a washing machine. We're in a pretty remote location, so if we would get washed offshore then we would be facing high chances of getting lost.” Safety is paramount and the South American dive team are well versed in the challenges of the pounding Pacific surf.

“Our tactics are based on being as close to the waves as we can, so we're gonna go very light and with fins just to kick around the waves and try not to get dragged.” With tons of water breaking over them every few seconds, even with their extensive experience, they struggle to film. “Each big wave made everything turn white. I was trying to hold shots, but at the same time, you're kind of looking around to see where you are. You end up fighting all the water movement. We were bracing ourselves with our feet, with our hands and just leaving one hand to hold the camera. It's a bit nerve-racking, so it wasn't ideal.”

The team need to rethink their plan. “It's just finding the balance and the right spots where we can see this happening without us ending dragged on the shore by these big waves.” With their limited filming days running out, the crew scour iguana feeding haunts along the jagged coastline. They need to find the perfect spot with deep enough water to protect them from the breaking waves above. “We finally came across this place that, it's sheltered it for us, but the waves are still huge and breaking over us, so yeah hopefully we can manage to get the most out of this.”

Santi and Javier prepare to make one of their very last dives. Sheltered by a reef edge, the team finally stand a chance of capturing the shots they came here for. “It's been amazing. It's just so beautiful and so much going on. The big waves come in and there's so much water being moved around. Some iguanas get torn out of their feeling place and they just come out of nowhere, in every direction. And you see them like upside down or trying to brace themself against things. It cost me a fin, a boot, but it's totally worth it getting to film stuff that nobody has seen.”

“It's nerve-racking, but at the same time, it's been a really fulfilling experience. Actually getting to see them struggling in and out, it's really humbling to see what the iguanas have to go through.” These ground-breaking images illustrate the remarkable adaptability and endurance of Galapagos creatures in their efforts to make these far-flung islands home.

In southeast Alaska, where the coastal mountains meet the pacific lies the Alexander archipelago, a remote island chain, running for almost 500 kilometres along the Alaskan panhandle. The Eden team spent a year braving the freezing conditions in one of the most remote and pristine wildernesses left in North America. With new technologies, they were able to reveal the hidden lives of its exceptional wildlife. From the minuscule to its mighty megafauna. But the team's biggest challenge was to capture the intimate story of bear families on the quest to find food along Alaska's coastline.

In spring, camera operator Luke Barnett, set sail for Admiralty Island in the Alexander archipelago, accompanied by bear expert Bjorn Dihle and their timing is impeccable. “Just arrived our filming location, and there's a mother with 2 cubs on the beach. Bjorn recognised her, she's 26 years old. It's so amazing to see them. Day One!” In this remote wilderness, the crew will have to be entirely self-sufficient. Setting up camp in bear country, rule number one is to cache any food high up in a tree away from sensitive noses, and erect an electric fence to deter any surprise visitors.

“So right now it's on and it emits a small jolt every second. It's really not that bad. That was more just me being a wimp than anything else, but it scares the heck out of bears.” The team heads for the coastal meadows where mothers with cubs gather to feed each spring. “Bjorn's normally the strong silent type and he's talking a lot on this trip and that's just so we don't surprise any bears who think another bear's come around the corner and they charge us.”

It quickly becomes clear that this is far from a peaceful scene. “One thing I have noticed about the bears is they spend a lot of their time looking quite anxious and they're always looking about for other bears, especially the females, and the males are always looking to antagonise other males.” Newly emerged from hibernation, the 300 kilograms male grizzlies are ravenous, eager to mate and highly territorial.

“It's incredibly daunting. Having filmed predators all around the world, I've only have approached them in a vehicle before, so you've got that armour around you. This is the biggest land predator here and it can move at speeds of up to 35 miles an hour. The only thing I have to stop them essentially is some kind of bear spray. They're quite scary at times.” Respecting bears, and learning to read their behaviour can avoid conflict.
“非常可怕。我在世界各地拍摄过猎食动物,不过那都是坐在车里靠近它们,毕竟有车壳铁甲的保护。棕熊是这里体形最大的猎食动物,它们能以每小时超过55公里的速度冲锋。而我能用来阻止它们的东西,只有防熊喷雾剂,这些棕熊有时候非常可怕。”尊重棕熊,并学习解读它们的行为,可以避免冲突的发生。
“Now we got a big male bear, about 30 meters away from us. It's kinda looking at anything that moves as a potential competitor, as a potential mate.” Bjorn tells Luke to face the bear, stand his ground. And talks to it calmly. “If he keeps us here, we're gonna have some issues. I've never had an adult male do this.” After a tent standoff, the male grizzly finally moves away.

Over the next few weeks, the team's perseverance is rewarded with intimate encounters from a young mother with cubs. “So these bears are getting pretty close now, which is a great sign for the filming, but the mother's probably due to come into season any moment now and that'll bring the males in, so everything could change. And those cubs could be in for a little bit of a shock.”
接下来的几周里,摄制组的坚持有所回报,近距离拍摄到了年轻的熊妈妈和幼崽。“棕熊距离我们越来越近了,这是一个拍摄的好机会。但是雌性棕熊随时可能进入发情期,那会把雄性棕熊吸引过来,所以情况随时可能改变,这些幼崽可能会受到一些惊吓。”
It doesn't take long for Luke's concerns to become a reality. A huge and scarred male grizzly approaches. “This big bear has got a big cut on its head, it's been fighting, potentially very angry bear. Everything's fine when I looks through the viewfinder, so I'll just carry on doing that for a little bit, I think.” While still on the lookout for amorous males, mum takes the cubs to the beach for a day of clamming.

“That was pretty intense. The mother and cubs came down and they were so close and they started huffing a little bit. I can't tell how far away she is from the viewfinder, but I knew when I took the lens as wide as it would go and there was still a very big bear in frame, she was pretty close.” While a protective mother with cubs can pose a threat, as time passes, the team gain her trust. “We've been watching this female for the last 8 days and I've known her for 12 years and we don't approach her, we let her kinda do what she wants to do.”

But it may take Luke a little longer to be completely at ease. “We had to hold our position, but it was a little bit nerve-wracking. It was great to have Bjorn with me, because he was talking to the bears, just telling them what we were doing and half the time I thought he was talking to me, telling me to calm down, but I think he was genuinely talking to the bears then they chilled out completely and got the mother digging out a clam in full frame, and the cubs have learned that behaviour as well, so that was amazing to see.”

The grizzly bears fearsome reputation has contributed to their persecution. “In South East Alaska, there's about 2000 brown bears get shot by sports hunters every year and it's like less than one person will die from a brown bear every year.” While Luke maintains a healthy respect for these formidable predators, he has also experienced a gentler side. “This place is pretty special. It's a real sanctuary for the bears, and it's really lovely to be able to come somewhere where they're not hunted and they just go about their lives when we get to see them do that and that's gonna stick with me.”

At the tip of South America, spanning Chile and Argentina, lies a remote and frozen domain. It's known as Patagonia. Filming for more than a year, the Eden team braved some of the toughest conditions of any of their locations. Employing the latest filming technology, the crew set out to capture ground-breaking new behaviours from its coasts and pristine lowland forests, up to the high peaks of the Andes, in search of its rarest wildlife, with closer encounters than they had bargained for.

But the greatest challenge was to tell the story of flamingo chick's epic struggle to fledge in some of the most testing conditions on Earth. Camera operator, Tom Ross and team, venture into the vast and unforgiving Atacama desert. “It's freezing cold at night, it's boiling in the midday, it's basically like working on a knife edge.” Timing their arrival to coincide with the peak of the flamingo nesting season. Only to be confronted with devastating news. “As you can tell, all around me, there are thousands of empty nests.”
然而最大的挑战就是讲述在地球上极为严酷的环境中,火烈鸟雏鸟经历的艰难起飞过程。摄影师汤姆·罗斯和摄制组,冒险来到了广袤而严酷的阿塔卡马沙漠。“这里的夜晚异常寒冷,而中午又非常炎热,所以在这里拍摄极其艰难。”他们需要在火烈鸟筑巢的高峰期赶到这里,结果却听到了最具毁灭性的消息。“可以看到,在我的周围有成千上万的空巢。”
This year, the adult flamingos have abandoned their newly laid eggs. “The Rangers believe that this could be due to the climate. It's been a lot hotter and a lot dryer this year. Last year there was 500 born and this year there's none. To realise and see that first-person it's quite hard hitting.” The team head higher, into the heart of the Atacama desert. In the hope that the flamingos are still breeding in the cooler conditions up here.

But recent flooding has created waterlogged plains, making their passage near impossible. “Our rescue car is now also stuck in the mud, so I'm gonna have to rescue the rescue car!” Being so remote, there's no other help on hand so there's little choice but to wait until the plains dry out. 3 days later. Back on the road. The team finally reach one of the highest and most remote salt flats in Atacama. Their reward, a healthy colony of newly hatched flamingo chicks.

“They're just little bundles of joy to watch. Their gangly legs, the little giblet wings. They run like a kid with a cape, around the school playground, trying to fly like Superman.” Tom can now settle in for a month of hide work, charting their early development. But the extreme conditions that come with working in this high altitude desert begin to take their toll. “Going through nearly knee-deep mud, it's an absolute mission. The lack of oxygen is really hard to deal with. Some people like myself get headaches. I mean everything you do is exhausting.”

To capture the chicks' full story, the crew returns 2 months later to face even more extreme conditions. By early winter, the chicks must cope with temperatures that drop to sub-zero.“Not only were they penned in from the night before, they also have these shackles of ice and salt which weigh them down. They've only just started to fledge and they can't fly because they're full of ice. It's just crazy.”
为了捕捉到雏鸟的完整故事,摄制组两个月之后再次回到这里,结果遇到了更加极端的天气。初冬时节,这些雏鸟必须应付会降到零度以下的气温。“它们不仅要忍受寒冷的夜晚,冰和盐粒还像脚镣一样,成为它们沉重的负担。它们的羽翼刚刚丰满,它们还不能飞行,因为身上都是冰。太疯狂了。”
After over 3 months of sharing their company, witnessing all they have endured, Tom has formed a deep attachment to the chicks. “I think one of the hardest things for filming wildlife is, it's not the braving the element, it's more of a mental and emotional rollercoster, especially when you film something that's so young and you see them perish one by one, they have absolutely everything thrown at them, absolutely everything, It's just true to how hard these flamingos are, because it's absolutely savage up here.”

Though the hardship of their early lives are sometimes emotional for the crew, the safety offered by this extreme habitat means flamingos in Patagonia will continue to flourish. On this fragile planet, home to nearly 8 billion people, the threat to remaining wilderness grows ever greater. But, if we take steps to keep our world safe, enriched by natural wonders. Its exquisite symmetry. Kept in balance by infinite, intricate relationships. These last frontiers will remain. Forever Eden.
