Scene 1: The Beginning of a Story
[SFX: Gentle, melancholic background music fades in
Narration: I am no one special, just a common man with common thoughts. I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me, and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect, I've succeeded as gloriously as anyone who ever lived.
Nurse: It's a lovely day outside. Let's take a walk.
Old Allie: I don't think so.
Nurse: Well, we've got to get you out of this room. Come on now, honey. Some fresh air would do you good.
Old Duke: Hello.
Nurse:I'm sorry, it's not a good day. I don't think she's up for anything.
Old Allie: Hello?
Nurse: This is Duke, he's come to read to you.
Old Allie: Read?
Nurse: Mmm-hmm.
Old Allie:( Slow )No. I don't know.
Nurse: Oh, come on, you'll like him, he's very funny.
Old Allie: Ahh...
SFX: Walk to another room and sit down.
Old Duke: All right, now. Where did we leave off? Oh, yeah, yeah, it was dinner night. Noah was there with his friends Fin and Sara.
Old Allie: Noah?
Old Duke: That's where they met. June 6th, 1940. Allie was 17 years old.
[SFX: Lively carnival atmosphere – cheerful music, sounds of games.]
Narration:Young Noah spotted Allie at the carnival. It was love at first sight, though Allie wasn't as easily swayed.
Noah: You want to dance with me?
Allie: No.
Noah: Why not?
Allie: Because I don't want to.
Narration:Allie danced with another man, but Noah wasn't one to give up easily. He approached her again.
Noah: I would really like to take you out.
Allie:What? No.
Noah: No?
Allie: No!
Noah: No? Well, you leave me no other choice then.
Allie: Oh my God.
[Noah climbed onto the Ferris wheel, threatening to jump if Allie didn't agree to a date.]
Girl:Get Down! You are gonna kill yourself.
Man:Noah, cut it out!
Noah:(Straining, voice shaking) I'm gonna ask you one more time. Will you or will you not go out with me? God damn it! My hand is slippery.
Girl:Then grab the bar, you idiot.
Noah:Not until she agrees.
Man:Ah, go on out with him, honey.
Allie:(Panicked) Okay, okay, fine. I'll go out with you.
Noah: What? No, don't do me any favors.
Allie: No, no, I want to.
Noah: Say it.
Allie: I want to go out with you.
Noah: Say it again.
Allie: (Yell )I want to go out with you!
Noah: All right, all right, we'll go out.
Allie: You think you are so smart, don't you?
Girl:That wasn't funny, Noah, you idiot!
Allie:No, it's okay, I'll take care of this.
Noah:What are you doing?
Allie:(Pull his pants down)

Allie: Yeah, sure. Mr. Underware, was it?
Noah: Oh yeah.
Allie: How could I forget?
Noah: Yeah, I wanted to clear that up with you because I'm really sorry about that. It was a really stupid thing to do. But I had to be next to you. I was being drawn to you.
Allie:(Laughs in disbelief) Oh, jeez, what a line! You use that on all the girls?
Noah: No.
Allie: Right. I saw you the other night with little Miss Ribbons.
Noah: What are you doing tonight?
Allie: What?
Noah: Or tomorrow night, or this weekend, whatever.
Allie: Why?
Noah: Why? Our date.
Allie: What date?
Noah: The date you agreed to?
Allie: No.
Noah: Yes, you did. You promised and you swore it.
Allie: Well, I guess I changed my mind.
Noah: Look, I know you get some dirty guy coming up to you on the street. You don't know him, you don't know me, but I know me. And when I see something that I like, I gotta, I love it. I go, I mean crazy for it.
Allie: Okay, what are you talking about?
Noah: Well, you.
Allie: (Chuckle )Oh, you're good.
Noah: What?
Allie: You're good. You are.
Noah: No, you're getting me wrong.
Allie: You're fantastic.
Noah: I'm not.
Allie: You really are. I'm impressed.
Noah: I'm not usually like this, I'm sorry.
Allie: Oh yes, you are.
Noah: I can be fun if you want. Pensive, uh, smart. Uh, superstitious, brave. And, uh, I can be light on my feet. (Dance a bit) I could be whatever you want. You just tell me what you want and I'll be that for you.
Allie: You're dumb.
Noah:I could be that.
Noah:Come on, one date. What's it gonna hurt?
Allie:Hmm, I don't think so.
Noah:Well, what can I do to change your mind?
Allie:Guess you'll figure something out.
[SFX: Night. Walking on the Street. Distant Train.]
