老年版Edmund
Scene 1
Voiceover:A bony woman in her black gown stood with her trunk at an entrance of Pigeon Town in Summer 1890. She organized a group of children to stand in a row in front of her.
Nanny:(Roar fiercely.) Get back to your queue, all of you.
Sigmund:(Shout impatiently.) Why should we obey your order?
Nanny:(Rise your cane highly and point it to the sky.) Do as I said if you don’t want to be caned. (Turn your sight to the little boy next to you.) You boy, show me your arm. (Rinse the boy’s upper arm with water and inject with a bifurcated needle in the other hand of you quickly.) Well done, you didn’t cry. Ask your mummy to give you a candy.
Edmund:She doesn’t have any candies.
Nanny:She will make you something tasty this evening, I believe.
Edmund:Yes, she will. See you, Nanny Josephine.(Run away happily.)
Nanny:See you, dear. (Shout.) The next one, show your arm.
Scene 2
Voiceover:That was the only piece of memory Edmund Johnson had about Nanny Josephine. Mr. Johnson was ninety-five years old when he was interviewed in 1980. He sat in his warm armchair near the fireplace.
Old Edmund:I was five years old. The scar she gave me was left there forever. (Roll up your sleeve to show the scar.) It protected me from smallpox.
Zephyr:Did you see her again after that?
Old Edmund:No. She went away.
Zephyr:Why did she go?
Old Edmund:I don’t know. Nobody around us learned about it.
Zephyr:You may feel disturbed with this question, Mr. Johnson. However, I have to ask it. Was she a witch?
Old Edmund:No, I think not. She was not a witch even though she was terrible.
Scene 3
Voiceover:Zephyr Morris, a researcher of sociology, walked around again and again in the office of Doctor Colin Hanover. Holding her arms together did not give much relief. Biting a thumbnail while moving her sight out of the window seemed to get her merely better. Doctor Hanover cleared his throat as the boys outside walked away in laughter.
Colin:We will proceed to another part. There is no time for us to waste. Shifting the emphasis to the later part of Josephine’s life is the only way left.
Zephyr:It could be biased.
Colin:I know.
Zephyr:We need proofs for her innocence!
Colin:We are studying her correlationship with the remained activities of witch hunting in early twentieth century. Josephine was just one of the three cases we selected in this case study. We are responsible for the research, not her innocence.
Zephyr:From what we know, she could be innocent.
Colin:What do we know about her?
Zephyr:Pretty little. We have no evidence to prove that she was a witch.
Colin:Neither do we have any to say that she was innocent. The only way to prove her innocence is to enter the case from another entrance objectively.
Zephyr:What is it?
Colin:Not all dwellers of the town she lived in were Christians.
Zephyr:Who were not?
Colin:A couple of Jews, and a family of Buddhists, I found them.
Zephyr:Bad guy, you should have told me those earlier.
Colin:I do not mind to draw an oil paint of you holding your arms and thinking next to the window. That is the most extraordinary scene in the world.
Zephyr:(Pause a short while with reddish cheeks. Speak with feigned anger.) Give me their ways of contact.
Scene 4
Voiceover:Zephyr looked around Tahiti Avenue. Houses built at least a century ago surrounded her regardless of wherein the avenue she went. The voice of Colin appeared in her mind again when she was almost lost.
Colin:(Explain the existing situation to Zephyr. Reverberation might be needed.) The Jews couple moved to another country during World War II. I failed to find them. Nevertheless, the Buddhist family is still around. They moved to a large city after the war. Children of the family are all alive. Only their eldest brother is friendly to our interview. I suggest you to buy some fruits if your are going to prepare a present. They are vegetarian. The name of the gentleman is Herbert Pallas. Here is his address. You will meet him eleven o’clock next Sunday. The road around his house can easily make people lost. Stay alert when you are there.
Voiceover:Zephyr was rotating on a circular road and taking note of the signs of each block while recalling Colin’s words. She found herself at somewhere out of Tahiti Avenue while knocking into an elderly woman.
Zephyr:(Hold the woman’s arms to prevent her from falling.) Oh, dear, I’m sorry. Are you hurt?
Ophelia:Not quite, you must be more careful, my child.
Zephyr:I will. Can I ask you a question, please?
Ophelia:What is it?
Zephyr:Zephyr: How to go to block 23 of Tahiti Avenue?
Ophelia:(Inspect Zephyr from head to toe and counter-wise.) Why do you want to go there?
Zephyr:I’m going to interview Mr. Pallas.
Ophelia:At eleven o’clock, isn’t it?
Zephyr:How do you know?
Ophelia:Follow me. Where you are going is my house. (Walk in front.)
Zephyr:Gorgeous! Are you Mrs. Pallas then?
Ophelia:Ophelia, please. I have a name, just like you. What is yours?
Zephyr:Yes, Ophelia. I’m Zephyr from the Atlantis Institute of Social Science. My postgraduate program was conducted there as well.
Ophelia:I heard about it from my children. It is said to be a supreme academy in which researchers study both social and mysterious issues. Is that true?
Zephyr:Sooth to say, yes, our academy is quite mysterious on its own. Even so, I studied in the realistic segment.
Ophelia:Mysteries and legends can be true sometimes. Do not define them yet.
Zephyr:They may be. Do you believe in occult art, Ophelia?
Ophelia:Yes, I do.
Zephyr:Were there really any witches in this world?
Ophelia:There were, of course. Many witches exist today. So did the others in the past. They would not appear in the pubic and talk to people most of the time.
Zephyr:Have you met a real witch?
Ophelia:To be honest, yes. I used to meet one when I was much younger. She was a Hindu witch.
Zephyr:Was she accused of committing witchcraft by a church?
Ophelia:She could be.
Zephyr:(Turn your tone cold and unfriendly.) Is that your opinion toward Nanny Josephine?
Ophelia:Nanny Josephine?
Zephyr:She is the witch in your words.
Ophelia:Oh, dear. Did you misunderstand something?
Zephyr:No, I didn’t! I should not come! (Turn back and bellow lightly.) Why did I come and talk to a woman who does not even support women? (Find a rubbish bin near you and throw the fruits you brought inside.)
Ophelia:What are you talking about? She was a Hindu witch named Barbara.
