Something Important

课堂上。

老师：All right then, Yagami! Please recite this line for us.

月：Sure.（读课文）Having finally made his dream a reality, he was overwhelmed both by the magnitude of his achievement and by the joy and happiness that it brought him.

老师：（夸奖）That was very well done, but I'm not surprised, of course. Absolutely flawless. Very good. Well, then, we'll leave it at that for today.

放学了。琉克跟着月。

琉克：（无聊）I thought it would never end. How do you do this every day? It's so boring here. Hey, where are you going?

走在校园里。

琉克：（不耐烦）Hey, Light! Are you listening to me?

月：（谨慎）Don't talk to me. Unlike you, people can still hear me when I talk out loud.

琉克：（无聊）Well, aren't you boring?

一个同学走来。

同学：（热情）Hey, what's up, Light? We were just gonna head down...（被打断）

月：（打断）Sorry, I'm a little busy today.

琉克：You don't have anything to do. Aren't you just going to go home and hang out in your room, as usual? 

月：What are you talking about? Of course I have something to do.

琉克：Yes, something very important.

回到家里。月开始写笔记。

新闻男声：（电话音）There was more violence across the city today. Another stabbing, this time at a restaurant in the heart of the Kaulkicho District of Shinjuku. 

琉克：Hey Light!（不耐烦）I'm talking to you!

月：（平淡）What is it?

琉克：（疑惑）Why are you working so hard?

月：（平淡）I can't afford to waste any time. I have a very small window to write names in this notebook. I only have from when I get home from school until I go to bed. I still need to sleep so I can maintain my average and stay at the top of my class. Obviously, I can't be sleeping in class. Plus, there's all the studying at home and at cram school. I can't let myself get too tired. It'll start to affect my health and my mental performance. If I'm serious about trying to create an ideal world that's free from evil, then I need to make the most of my time.

Part Two

Sister

妹妹想开门，发现锁了。

妹妹：Huh? Weird.（大声）Hey, Light! What's going on? Why is your door locked?

月：（对琉克）It's Sayu.（对门外）What is it?

妹妹：（大声）Can you help me with my homework?

月：Yeah, OK.

月开门。

妹妹：We're doing quadratic equations in math. Sorry to interrupt. I know you're studying right now. But I'm like the only person in my class who doesn't get this stuff. Thanks so much.

月：No problem.

琉克：（小声）I'd be careful if I were you. If anyone else touches that notebook, you've got hidden in the drawer right now, they'll be able to see me too.

月：（内心OS）He waits till now to mention that important detail? Damn Shinnigami! 

妹妹：What's wrong? Are you all right?

月：It's nothing so. What exactly don't you understand? What are you stuck on?

妹妹：Oh, well, I think all of it.

Part Three

ICPO Conference

ICPO国际刑事警察机构在开会。

官员A：There have been 52 deaths that we're aware of. And that's just in the past week. Every single one of them involved a heart attack. They were all criminals who were either being held in prison or who were wanted by police for outstanding crimes. And I think it's safe to say there are other criminals whose deaths are unaccounted for.

官员B：In which case the death toll could be well over 100.

警长在警员旁坐下。

警员：Morning, Chief.（道歉）They started the meeting without you.

警长：（冷静）That's fine. I had to take an urgent call from headquarters.

官员A：At any rate, these were criminals who were probably facing execution sooner or later.

官员B：（反驳）Perhaps we shouldn't wait...（被打断）

官员A：（打断）Why should it matter whether it's a criminal or someone innocent?（争吵）Last time I checked, murder was still murder!

官员B：（争吵）It's still too early to consider these a homicide! 

官员A：（争吵）Then how did all these people have heart attacks at the exact same time? That's not coincidence! It's murder!

官员B：（争吵）Do you think it's possible to simultaneously kill all these people in different locations?

官员A：（争吵）We're treating this as an elaborate murder plot that's been carried out by a law organization! 

官员B：（争吵）If it is a large organization, I'm sure I'm not alone in suspecting the FBI or CIA.

官员A：（争吵）I dare you to say that again!

官员B：（争吵）Now this is not the time to be joking around! We need to confirm that these are indeed homicides and not coincidences!

官员A：（争吵）How? Autopsy results showed that in all of these cases the victims died of a sudden heart attack.

官员B：（争吵）Investigating a series of heart attacks is pointless. I don't see what else we can learn.

官员A：（争吵）Absolutely. If these people have been shot or stabbed, at least we'd have something to go on.

官员B：（争吵）If that's the case, it looks as if you'll have no choice but to bring in L.

Part Four

Detective L

听到L的名字，众人哗然，开始窃窃私语。

警员：（疑惑）Chief, what's this L they're talking about? 

警长：（冷静）Right. I forgot that it's your first time at this conference.（解释）We don't know L's real name or whereabouts. In fact, we still don't even know what he looks like. However, he's managed to solve every case he's ever taken on. And he's tackled some of the greatest mysteries this world has ever known. He hides in the shadows, but he's the best of the best, a last resort, our trump card.

官员A：（傲慢）But I've heard this L is extremely arrogant. I understand he'll only take on cases that he's personally interested in.

官员B：That's exactly right. Besides we don't even know how to contact him.

角落传来一个声音。

黑衣人：（神秘）L is already on the move.

黑衣人走进会场。众人议论纷纷。

官员A：What? What the heck? 

黑衣人：（神秘）Gentlemen, L has already begun his investigation into these incidents.

警员：（疑惑）Who's that? 

警长：That man's the only known person who can contact L? Nobody knows his true identity either.

黑衣人：（神秘）Please be silent. L would like to address the delegates.

黑衣人打开电脑，与L线上通话。

L：（电话音）Greetings to all of you at the ICPO! I am L. The difficulty of this case lies in its unprecedented scope. And make no mistake. We're witnessing an atrocious act of mass murder, one that is unforgivable. This case cannot be solved without the full cooperation of the ICPO. That is all of the police organizations you represent throughout the world. You need to make the decision to fully support the investigation at this meeting. Also, I require additional cooperation from Japan's national police agency.

警员：（震惊）Huh?

警长：（震惊）What? Why Japan in particular? 

L：（电话音）Whether the guilty party is an individual or a group, there's a strong possibility of their Japanese. And even if they're not, we can be sure they're hiding in Japan. 

警长：（提问）What is all this based on? 

L：（电话音）Why Japan you ask? I think I'll be able to provide you with proof of that after I directly confront the culprit.

警长：（疑惑）A direct confrontation?

L：（电话音）At any rate, I would like to set up the investigation headquarters in Japan.

Part Five

Website of Kira

镜头一转，来到街头。

新闻男声：（电话音）Last night in the West Tokyo Penitentiary, Naoki Korotsukayama, originally sentenced to 15 years for armed robbery, is reported to have died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 32. This is just the most recent death and a steadilyly growing number of cases involving inmates dying...

路人对近期事件议论纷纷。

路人A：This is unbelievable. Criminals are dropping like flies lately. 

路人B：It's a little scary, but at the same time it's kind of cool.

路人A：Just make sure you don't do anything bad.

路人B：I wouldn't be surprised if the police were behind this.

路人A：No way! The police don't have that kind of power.

路人B：Don't you know about him?

路人A：About who?

路人B：Kira? You know? Kira.

路人A：I wonder who's going to be killed next.

Kira的支持者越来越多。镜头一转，来到月房间。

月：（得意）Ryuk, you should check this out.

琉克：（好奇）Huh?

月：（得意）Websites like this are popping up everywhere lately.

月打开网站。

琉克：（读网站文字）Legend of Kira - The Savior. Sounds pretty cool. Is this about you?

月：（得意）Yeah, I think they've taken the name KIRA from the English word -KILLER. I can't say I'm too happy about that. But it looks like that's the name they've decided to give me. When I searched the word Kira, I'm pulling up tons of sites just like this one. The media hasn't picked up on it. They're still calling this a succession of unexplained deaths among the world's most hardened criminals. But the people of the world can already sense that there's something happening. They know there's someone out there passing righteous judgment.

琉克：（好奇）Oh? 

月：Human beings are like that, Ryuk. Although this would probably never happen in school, let's say that students were asked to discuss whether bad people deserve to die. Well, you can bet that everyone would give the politically correct answer.

月：That's what they're bound to say, of course. That's the correct response to give, right? Humans will always try to maintain appearances when they're in public. That's just how we are. But this is how they really feel. Most are too afraid to support me as they're worried about what others will think. Many would rather deny my existence. But on the internet, where you can remain anonymous support for Kira is growing. Maybe people are afraid to say it out loud, but they all understand what's happening. 

月：Someone's making the bad guys disappear one by one. Those who have done no wrong or cheering for Kira in their hearts, because they have nothing to fear. While those who have done wrong are on the run, they're forced to hide from an unknown enemy. （得意）This is how it should be! It's perfect! Everything is going just like I planned!  

Part Six

TV Broadcast

月和琉克在看电视。

新闻男声：（电话音）We'd like to apologize for the interruption. As of now we're bringing you a live worldwide broadcast from ICPO.

琉克：（疑惑）Hmm? What's this?

新闻男声：（电话音）We now take you live to the ICPO.

L出现在新闻台上。

L：（电话音）I head up an international police task force which includes all member nations. I am Lind. L. Taylor. Otherwise known as L.

月：（疑惑）What? Who is this guy?

镜头一转，来到电视台后台。

警长：（冷静）So this is how it all begins.

警员：（疑惑）Sir, I don't get it. He's never actually shown his face before, right? Why would he choose to do it now?

警长：It must mean L's serious about this.（内心OS）L, we followed every single one of your orders. Now it's time for you to prove what you said to the ICPO.

镜头转到电视新闻台。

L：（电话音）Criminals around the world are being murdered by a serial killer. I consider this crime to be the most atrocious act of murder in history.（决心）I will not rest until the person or persons responsible are brought to justice. Kira, I will hunt you down. I will find you.

琉克：He seems certain he'll catch you. 

月：（不屑）That fool. He'll never find me. He'll never get this first!（自信）And as long as the police don't find it, there won't be any evidence to convict me, which means that catching me will be absolutely impossible! I anticipated that the police would get involved in that. Something like this might happen.

L：（电话音）Kira, I've got a pretty good idea what your motivation might be. And I can guess what you hope to achieve. （咒骂）However, what you're doing right now is evil! 

月：（愤怒）You think I'm evil?（激动）I AM JUSTICE! I protect the innocent and those who fear evil! I'm the one who become the god of a new world that everyone desires! All those who would oppose that God, they are the ones who are truly evil!（嘲笑）I guess you're just too stupid, L. Too bad. This could have been a lot more interesting if you'd only been a bit smarter.

月：（写下L名字）I'll show the world what happens when you cross me.（凶狠）The entire world is watching, L! Five more seconds. Four, three, two, one.

新闻里，L突发心脏病死亡。

月：（得意）Hahaha! What's wrong? You've got nothing else to say? 

Part Seven

The Trick

新闻画面切断，出现L声音。

刚才死的不是真正的L。

月：（电话音）I had to test this system in case, but I never thought it would actually happen. Kira, it seems you can kill people without having to be there in person. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't just witnessed.（自信）Listen to me, Kira. If you did indeed kill Lind. L. Taylor, the man you just saw die on television. I should tell you that he was an inmate, whose execution was scheduleed for today. That was not me.

月：（震惊）What?

L：（电话音）The police arrested him in absolute secrecy. So you wouldn't have heard about him on TV or through the internet. It appears that not even you have access to information about these types of criminals.

琉克：Hahaha. He got you there.

L：（电话音）But I assure you, L is real. I do exist.（嚣张）Now try to kill me! 

月：（震惊）You, you bastard!

L：（电话音）What's wrong? Hurry up!

镜头转到街头。商场大屏在播放L新闻。

路人A：（疑惑）What's going on? 

路人B：（激动）Look! It's Kira versus L.

路人A：（疑惑）Live broadcasting?

路人B：（激动）Amazing!

路人A：（激动）Do it, Kira!

镜头转到L房间。

L：（电话音）Can't you do it?（嘲笑）Well, Kira, it seems that you can't kill me after all. So there are some people you can't kill. You've given me a useful hint. Let me return the favor. I'll tell you something that I think you'll find interesting. Although this was announced as a world wide broadcast, the truth is we are only broadcasting in the Kanto Region of Japan. I had planned to broadcast this message around the world until we found you, but it looks like that won't be necessary. I now know where you are.

琉克：Hahaha. This L guy is pretty good.

Part Eight

I Am Justice

新闻仍在播放L声音。

L：（电话音）The police treated your first killing as an unrelated incident. But in actuality, the first of your victims was a suspecting Shinjuku. Of all the criminals that initially died of heart attacks, this one's crime was by far the least serious. Furthermore, this crime was only ever reported inside Japan. I used that information to deduce this much.（自信）You are in Japan. 

L：（电话音）And your first victim was little more than an experiment, which means that you haven't been killing for very long. We decided to broadcast in Kanto first, because of its large population. And luckily, we found you. To be completely honest with you, I never expected that things would go this well. But it won't be too long now before I am able to sentence you to death.

镜头转到电视台后台。

警员：（佩服）L has certainly lived up to his reputation.

警长：He proved that Kira exists, that the deaths were murders, and that he is here in Japan.

镜头转到月房间。

L：（电话音）Naturally, I'm very interested to know how you're able to commit these murders without being present. But I don't mind waiting a little bit longer.（自信）You can answer all of my questions when I catch you. Let's meet again soon, Kira.

月：（震惊）Really? He's going to sentence me to death?（自信）Sounds interesting! I accept your challenge, L!

琉克：Each of them has to hunt down the other without knowing the other's name or face. And the first one whose identity is revealed will die. Humans are so much fun.

月：L...

L：Kira...

月和L：（齐声）I will hunt you down wherever you're hiding!（激动）And I will eliminate you! I AM JUSTICE!
