Jack C：Sorry to pull you off the course on such short notice.Your instructors tell me you're doing well.Top quarter of your class.

Jack C：A job's come up, and I thought about you.Not a job really.More of an interesting errand.I remember you from my seminar at UVA.

Clarice：Yeah.

Jack C：You grilled me pretty hard, as I recall,on the Bureau's civil rights record in the Hoover years.I gave you an "A."

Clarice：A-minus, sir.

Jack C：Let's see.Double major ? psych and criminology.Graduated magna.Summer internships at the Reitzinger Clinic.It says here, when you graduate,you wanna come to work for me in behavioral science.

Clarice：Yes. Very much, sir. Very much.

Jack C：We're interviewing all the serial killers now in custody for a psycho-behavioral profile.Could be a real help in unsolved cases.most of them have been happy to talk to us.You spook easily, Starling?

Clarice：Not yet, sir.

Jack C：See, the one we want most refuses to cooperate.I want you to go after him again today in the asylum.

Clarice：Who's the subject?

Jack C：The psychiatrist, Hannibal Lecter.

Clarice：Hannibal the Cannibal.喃喃自语

Jack C：I don't expect him to talk to you...but I have to be able to say we tried.So, if he won't cooperate,I want just straight reporting ?how's he look, how's his cell look.Is he sketching, drawing?If he is, what's he sketching?Here's a, uh, dossier on Lecter...copy of our questionnaire,and a special ID for you.Have your memo on my desk by 0800 Wednesday.

Clarice：Okay.Um, excuse me, sir, but why the urgency?Lecter's been in prison for so many years now.Is there some connection between him and Buffalo Bill maybe?

Hannibal：No! I will listen now.After your father's murder, you were orphaned.You were 10 years old.you went to live with cousins on a sheep and horse ranch in Montana.And?

Clarice：And one morning, I just ran away.

Hannibal：Not "just," Clarice. What set you off?You started at what time?

Clarice：Early. Still dark.

Hannibal：Then something woke you, didn't it?Was it a dream?What was it?

Clarice：I heard a strange noise.

Hannibal：What was it?

Clarice：It was. . .screaming.Some kind of screaming,like a child's voice.

Hannibal：What did you do?

Clarice：I went downstairs, outside.I crept up into the barn house.I was so scared to look inside,but I had to.

Hannibal：What did you see, Clarice?What did you see?

Clarice：Lambs.They were screaming（陷入回忆喃喃自语）.

Hannibal：They were slaughtering the spring lambs?

Clarice：And they were screaming（陷入回忆喃喃自语）.

Hannibal：And you ran away?

Clarice：No.First I tried to free them. I ..I opened the gate to their pen,but they wouldn't run.They just stood there, confused.They wouldn't run.

Hannibal：But you could, and you did, didn't you?

Clarice：Yes.I took one lamb and I ran away as fast as I could.

Hannibal：Where were you going, Clarice?

Clarice：I don't know. I didn't have any food,any water, and it was very cold.It was very cold.I thought ...I thought if I could save just one,he was so heavy.He was so heavy.I didn't get more than a few miles when the sheriff's car picked me up.Rancher was so angry, he sent me to live at the Lutheran orphanage in Bozeman.I never saw the ranch again.

Hannibal：What became of your lamb, Clarice?

Clarice：They killed him.

Hannibal：You still wake up sometimes, don't you?Wake up in the dark and hear the screaming of the lambs.

Clarice：Yes.

Hannibal：And you think if you saved poor Catherine,you could make them stop, don't you?You think, if Catherine lives,you won't wake up in the dark ever again. . .to that awful screaming of the lambs.

Clarice：I don't know. I don't know.

Hannibal：Thank you, Clarice.Thank you.(轻轻闭了下眼眼里含着泪花轻声呢喃)

Clarice：Thank you.Tell me his name, Doctor.

Hannibal：Dr. Chilton, I presume?I think you know each other.

这时狱警来了，让她赶紧离开这里。

Clarice：It's your turn, Doctor.Tell me his name.

Hannibal：Brave Clarice.You will let me know when those lambs stop screaming, won't you?

剧情插入“《沉默的羔羊》最后的结局：Clarice击毙了杀人魔王野牛比尔,救出了参议员的女儿。在庆功宴上, 越狱逃走的Hannibal博士给Clarice打了个电话,之后融入人流,寻找他的下一个猎物去了。”
