The Lower East Side of Manhattan is home to some of the oldest and most storied charities in the country, founded at the dawn of the Progressive era.

在曼哈顿下东区，坐落着美国历史最为悠久且充满传奇色彩的一批慈善机构，它们诞生于进步时代的曙光初绽之时（译者注：进步时代指的是19世纪80年代到20世纪20年代，是美国历史上从农业社会向工业社会急剧变革的重要时期，特征为社会、政治和经济的多方面改革）。

University Settlement, established in 1886, opened one of the first public baths in New York City. In 1893, Henry Street Settlement began offering health care to neighborhood residents and later convened the conference that led to the formation of the N.A.A.C.P.

1886年，大学睦邻之家宣告成立，旋即开设了纽约市首批公共浴室之一。到了1893年，亨利街社区中心开始为社区居民提供医疗保健服务，后来更是召开了一场意义非凡的会议，直接促成了美国有色人种协进会的成立。

Today, New Yorkers in need continue to depend on these charities for housing assistance, child and elder care, food security, education and employment training.

时至今日，那些需要帮助的纽约市民仍然仰赖这些慈善组织，以获得住房补助、儿童与老年人的照料服务、食品安全保障、教育机会以及职业培训。

Yet poverty on the Lower East Side has been increasing for decades, and Manhattan has the most unequal income distribution of any large county in America.

It’s a similar story across the country. In recent years, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg and many others have poured billions into fighting poverty, protecting the environment and improving health outcomes. Corporate giving has also grown significantly over the past 5 years.

放眼全国，情况都大同小异。近年来，比尔·盖茨、沃伦·巴菲特、迈克尔·布隆伯格等一众富豪已豪掷数百亿美金，致力于消除贫困、守护生态环境、改善民众健康状况。过去五年间，企业捐赠同样实现了大幅增长。

Yet despite these efforts, income inequality is worse than it’s been since before the Great Depression, and poverty and its associated social pathologies remain stubbornly pervasive. What gives?

然而，尽管各方付出了诸多努力，收入不平等的现象却愈演愈烈，甚至超过了大萧条（译者注：大萧条是指1929年至1933年之间发源于美国，并后来波及整个资本主义世界的经济危机）之前的程度，贫困及其衍生的各种社会顽疾依然普遍存在，难以根除。这究竟是何原因呢？

There’s a simple answer, one you’ll never hear in the grand halls of the charity gala circuit: The math of philanthropy simply doesn’t work. And it never will.

答案其实很简单，但你在慈善晚会的豪华大厅里却永远不会听到：慈善事业的运作逻辑压根就行不通，而且也绝无可能行得通。

Americans typically understand charities as organizations that pick up where the government leaves off — championing the poor, the environment, the sick and the marginalized. But this framing is incomplete, and frankly misleading.
