Brent(19): What do we care if we were expelled from college, Scarlett? The war's gonna start any day now, so we'd have left anyhow.

Stuart(19): War! Isn't it exciting, Scarlett? Those fool Yankees actually want a war. We'll show them!

Scarlett(16): Fiddle-dee-dee. War, war, war! This war talk's spoiling all the fun at every party this spring. I get so bored I could scream. If either of you boys says "war" just once again, I'll go in the house and slam the door.

Brent: But, Scarlett, honey!

Stuart: Don't you want us to have a war?

Brent: Promise?

Scarlett: Why, I'd just love to.

Brent : (jump and yell) Yohoo!!!

Scarlett: If only... If only I didn't have every one of them taken already.

Brent : (dismayed) Why, honey! You can't do that to us! How about if we tell you a secret.

Scarlett : (interested) A secret? Who about?

Stuart: Well, you know Melanie Hamilton from Atlanta? Ashley Wilkes' cousin? Well,she's visiting...

Scarlett : (interrupt)Melanie Hamilton.That goody-goody! Who wants to know about her?

Brent: Well, anyway, they say Ashley Wilkes is gonna marry her.

Scarlett :  (like receiving a stunning blow)

Brent: You know the Wilkes always marry their cousins. 

Stuart: Do we get those waltzes?

Brent : (unaware; continue) You know the Wilkes always marry their cousins.

Stuart: Now do we get all those waltzes?

Scarlett : (automatically; quietly) Of course.

Scarlett : (stand up and leave; whisper) It can't be true! Ashley loves me! 

Brent: Scarlett! Where're you going?

Mammy(60+): (call from the upper window) Miss Scarlett, where are you going without your shawl and the night air fixing to set in? And how come you didn't ask the gentlemen to stay for supper? You got no more manners than a field hand. After Miss Ellen and me done labored with you! Come on in before you catch your death of dampness.

Scarlett : (call back impatiently) No! I'm going to wait for Pa to come home from the Wilkes.

Mammy: Come on in here! Come on!... Umph...

Gerald(60) : (to his horse)There's none in the County can touch you, and none in the State.

Scarlett : (smile; calling) Pa! How proud of yourself you are!

Gerald: Well, Katie Scarlett O'Hara, so you've been spying on me. Like your sister, Suellen, you'll tell your mother on me. 

Scarlett: Oh,Pa. You know I'm no tattle-tale like Suellen. But it does seem to me that after you broke your knee last year jumping that same fence...

Gerald: I'll not have my own daughter telling me what I shall jump and not jump. It's my own neck, so it is.

Scarlett : All right, Pa, you jump what you please. [4:16 挽起爸爸的胳膊] How are they at Twelve Oaks? 

Gerald: The Wilkes? In the stew you'd expect with a barbecue tomorrow and talking nothing but war...

Scarlett : (interrupt) Bother the war! Was...was anyone else there?

Gerald: Oh...their cousin Melanie Hamilton and her brother, Charles.

Scarlett: Melanie Hamilton is a pale-faced, mealy-mouthed ninny! And I hate her.

Gerald: Ashley Wilkes doesn't think so. I heard that he's going to marry Miss Melanie. It'll be announced tomorrow night at the ball.

Scarlett : (angry) I don't believe it!

Gerald : (calling after her) Here! Where are you off to? Scarlett! (catch up with her) What are you about? Have you been making a spectacle of yourself? Running about after a man who's not in love with you when you might have any of the bucks in the County?

Scarlett: I haven't been running after him, it's... it's just a surprise, that's all.

Gerald: Now, don't be jerking your chin at me! If Ashley wanted to marry you, it would be with misgivings that I'd say yes. For I want my girl to be happy. But you'd not be happy with him.

Scarlett: I would! I would!

Gerald: But what's the difference does it make who you marry? So long as he's a Southerner. And when I'm gone... I'll leave Tara to you.

Scarlett: I don't want Tara. Plantations don't mean anything when...

Gerald : (interrupt; indignant) Do you mean to tell me, Katie Scarlett O'Hara that land doesn't mean anything to you? Land is the only thing in the world worth working for, worth fighting for, worth dying for. Because it's the only thing that lasts! 

Scarlett : (disgusted) Oh,Pa. You talk like an Irishman.

Gerald : It's proud I am that I'm Irish. Don't you be forgetting, Missy, that you're half Irish too. To anyone with a drop of Irish blood in them, the land they live on is like their mother. (softly) Oh, but there now. You're just a child. It'll come to you, this love of the land. There's no getting away from it if you're Irish.

Scarlett : (have an idea) Ashley doesn't know I love him. Oh! What a fool I've been not to think of this till now. I'll tell him that I love him and then he wouldn't marry her. How could he?

Prissy(11): Mammy, here's Miss Scarlett's vittles.

Scarlett: Take it back to the kitchen. I won't eat a bite.

Scarlett: No, I'm not! Put on the dress. We're late already.

Mammy: What my lamb gonna wear?

Mammy : (defeated; help her put on the dress) Well,keep your shawl on. I ain't aiming for you to get all freckled after the buttermilk. I done put on you all this winter, bleaching the freckles. (sweetly) And now, Miss Scarlett. You come on and be good and eat just a little, honey.

Scarlett : (determined) No! I'm going to have a good time today and do my eating at the barbecue.

Mammy: If you don't care what folks says about this family, I does! I always told you and told you that you can always tell a lady by how she eats in front of folks like a bird. I ain't aiming for you to go to John Wilkes' and gobble like a hog!

Scarlett : [8:23 满不在乎地走向门口 同 ] Fiddle-dee-dee! Ashley told me he liked to see a girl with a healthy appetite.

Mammy: What gentlemens says and thinks is different things. And I ain't noticed Mr. Ashley asking for to marry you.

Scarlett : (turn around and glare at Mammy fiercely)

Mammy: Now don't eat too fast. Ain't no need a having it come right back up again.

Scarlett: Why is it a girl has to be so silly to catch a husband? I'm tired of acting like I don't eat more than a bird, and walking when I want to run, and saying "How wonderful you are!" to fool men who haven't got one-half the sense I've got. 

Mammy: It's because gentlemen don't know what they wants. They just knows what they think they wants. And giving them what they thinks they wants saves a pile of misery and being an old maid. They think they wants mousy little girls with bird's tastes and no sense at all.

Scarlett: Some day I'm going to do and say everything I want to do and say, and if people don't like it I don't care.

Mammy: No,you ain't. Not while I got breath.

Gerald : (calling from outside) Scarlett O'Hara! If you're not down here by the time I count 10, we'll go without you! 

Scarlett : (calling back) I'm coming, Pa!

Gerald : (calling from outside) One, two, three... (CV继续数下去；Scareltt不用等)

Scarlett: Oh, dear! My stays are so tight, I'll never get through the day without belching!

Scarlett: Ashley!

Ashley(21): Scarlett, my dear! 

Scarlett: I've been looking for you everywhere. I've got something I must tell you. Can't we go someplace quiet?

Ashley: Yes, I'd like to, I... I have something to tell you, too. But come say hello to my cousin Melanie first.

Scarlett: Oh, do we have to?

Ashley : She's been so looking forward to seeing you again. (calling) Melanie! Here's Scarlett. 

Melanie(17): [0:30 走近二人] Scarlett! I'm so glad to see you again.

Scarlett : (gushing insincerely) Melanie Hamilton, what a surprise to run into you here. I hope you're going to stay a few days with us at least.

Melanie: I hope I'll be able to stay long enough for us to become real friends, Scarlett. I do want us to be. 

Ashley: We'll keep her here, won't we, Scarlett?

Scarlett: We'll make the biggest fuss over her, won't we, Ashley! If there's anybody knows how to give a girl a good time, it's Ashley. Though I expect our good times here will seem terribly silly to you because you're so serious.

Melanie: Oh, Scarlett, you have so much life. I've always admired you so. I wish I could be more like you.

Scarlett: You mustn't flatter me and say things you don't mean.

Ashley : Nobody could accuse Melanie of being insincere. (to Melanie) Could they, my dear?

Scarlett : Oh well, then she's not like you, is she, Ashley? He never means a word he says to any girl. (turn around)Oh! Why, Charles Hamilton, you handsome old thing, you!

Charles(20): Oh... Miss O'Hara, I...

Scarlett: Do you think that was kind to bring your good-looking brother down here just to break my poor, simple, country girl's heart?

Charles : (blushed; can't think of anything to say)
